Video Game Tutorials for Great Design?

July 2022 Focus

During the July Instructional Design SIG, we'll help to guide an interactive conversation around the article Video Game Tutorials Exhibit Good Design Techniques written by Galen Midford.

In his article, Galen Midford explains that "badges, competition, and scoring aren't the only game-design elements to pay attention to."

Our conversation may focus around questions like—

  • How can interactive learning keep it simple?
  • How can learning design take advantage of common gestures, habits and norms?
  • How do you design for those who say they learn best through demonstration?
  • How do you design for those who say they learn best through experimentation?
  • What are great features that we can mimic in e-learning?  How can these features engage a learner?
  • What are features to avoid?  How can these disengage a learner?
    • How does storytelling engage learners by setting the stage?
    • Where can gamification have the biggest impact?
    • How do you provide learners instructions in different formats?
    • And more related ideas!

    • What is the group?

In our Instructional Design Special Interest Group, we will focus on the Instructional Design capability of ATD's Talent Development Capability Model™.  Each session will have a focused topic, but we welcome a diverse and organic discussion that may lead to other brilliant ideas.  The ATD VOS Instructional Design SIG will meet every other month through 2022.

    Who can attend?

All learning, development, and talent professionals are welcome to join--whether you're just starting to develop your first official course or you're a seasoned expert who uses SAM.

How does ATD define 'instructional design?'

Instructional design is an essential element of an effective learning effort. The creation of learning experiences and materials is what results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. Talent development professionals follow a system of assessing needs, designing a process, developing materials, and evaluating effectiveness. Instructional design requires the analysis and selection of the most appropriate strategies, methodologies, and technologies to maximize the learning experience and knowledge transfer.
