 Effectively Collaborating with SMEs

  November 2021 Focus

During the November Instructional Design SIG, we'll help to guide an interactive conversation--

  • Which effective ways do you use to introduce roles and expectations between the Instructional Designer and the Subject Matter Expert (SME)?
  • How do you prepare for meetings with SMEs?
  • What are effective ways to welcome SME feedback during design and development?
  • How do you get SMEs interested in collaborating when they have limited time?  Or worse--when they just don't want to meet with you?
  • What success have you found when asking SMEs to help lead some of the learning?
  • What are common mistakes you now avoid?  What advice would you give others?
  • And more related ideas!

In our Instructional Design Special Interest Group, we will focus on the Instructional Design capability of ATD's Talent Development Capability Model™.  Each session will have a focused topic, but we welcome a diverse and organic discussion that may lead to other brilliant ideas.  The ATD VOS Instructional Design SIG will meet every other month through the balance of 2021.

All learning, development, and talent professionals are welcome to join--whether you're just starting to develop your first official course or you're a seasoned expert who uses SAM.

Instructional design is an essential element of an effective learning effort. The creation of learning experiences and materials is what results in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. Talent development professionals follow a system of assessing needs, designing a process, developing materials, and evaluating effectiveness. Instructional design requires the analysis and selection of the most appropriate strategies, methodologies, and technologies to maximize the learning experience and knowledge transfer.
